The Digital Millennium Copyright Act is a Federal law that was enacted in the United States in 1998 that further extended and enhanced copyright protection to digital media. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or DMCA, prohibited the development, use, and distribution of computer software that was intended to give access to copyrighted material, such as music, movies, and computer software by circumventing copyright laws.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act was a response to the increasing popularity of internet piracy, where people would download copyrighted material, namely music, without having to pay for the music files. File sharing through various computer programs on the internet made it very easy for people to have access to copyrighted material and download it at no cost. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act set forth legal parameters and penalties in regards to computer piracy and digital copyright infringement practices.
